Quick and easy ideas for Alzheimer’s caregivers at home
Managing your role as a caregiver1-3
Facing a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is difficult for caregivers and their loved ones. As your loved one begins to lose his or her short-term memory and experience other symptoms related to dementia, there are some easy things you can do to make life more manageable. Here are some tips that can help in the earlier stages of Alzheimer’s, when some independence is still possible:
- Put a big clock and calendar in a visible area, so knowing the day and time doesn’t become an issue for your loved one
- Invest in a label maker (or just make your own). Notes and labels can help a great deal in making the transition for your loved one from independent living to relying on your caregiving smoother
- Get a bulletin board. They’re not just used in school classrooms or university quads. Bulletin boards are a great place to put reminders, schedules, and important phone numbers for you and your loved one to refer to
- Be consistent. Keep things located in the same place and follow routines. It is better to repeat simple instructions than try to explain them in a more complex manner
- Mind your lighting. Good lighting in the house is important. An obvious advantage is that it helps your loved one to see, as well as enhance his or her mood. It can also help stave off “sundowning” (a syndrome that presents behavioral problems in the evening or while the sun is setting). To prevent it, keep lighting appropriate (for time of day) and consistent, and establish a sleeping schedule. You can also rest more easily if you invest in some nightlights. These can help your loved one safely get around and visit the bathroom during the night
- Do delivery. Sure, you can have pizza and Chinese delivered, but it can also help caregivers to utilize other home delivery services, such as groceries, medications, and laundry. As Alzheimer’s symptoms progress, you may find it more difficult to leave the house, so it can be helpful to look up and use such home delivery services
